A vial backfilled with nitrogen and properly crimped resists this. A vial stoppered under air does not, and the headspace is not stated on any certificate the index holds.
Closure integrity is the boundary condition on residual moisture. A crimp that has lost its vacuum will read high months later regardless of how well the cycle was run.
A nitrogen headspace suppresses re-oxidation and scrambling in the solid state. Neither headspace composition nor closure integrity is on any certificate the index holds.
Headspace oxygen is the direct measurement and nobody orders it. In the small subset where both exist it correlates well with sulfoxide content.
